The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2012 Women's Report published
The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2012 Women's Report, published at Wednesday, 31/07/2013, represents the result of research on women's entrepreneurship in 67 economies of the world, as a part of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), the world's largest academic research project in the field of entrepreneurship. The research analyses rates and nature of female participation in entrepreneurship around the world, and contrasts these findings with male rates.
The key results of the research show that there are over 126 million women entrepreneurs, which are starting or running their businesses. In most of the economies, there are fewer women involved in entrepreneurship than men. Women entrepreneurs are drawn more to the consumer-industry sector while men continue to dominate the capital and knowledge-based manufacturing and service sectors. In Europe and the United States, women are as highly-educated, or more so, than men. Yet, they are less likely to believe they have the capabilities for starting businesses, in all research participating countries. Besides that, in every region, women have, on average, a greater level of fear of failure than men.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is part of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor since 2008. Entrepreneurship Development Centre (ED Centre) Tuzla is the official holder of the GEM project in Bosnia and Herzegovina, headed by national GEM team leader Professor Bahrija Umihanić. This way, data on entrepreneurship in B&H can be found in all annual world's GEM reports since 2008, and therefore also in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2012 Women's Report.
The results for Bosnia and Herzegovina, presented in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2012 Women's Report, indicate that the Total Early-Stage Entrepreneurial Activity – TEA of 5% (rate of individuals actively running their business not longer than 42 months) for women entrepreneurs is twice lower comparing to men. Rate of women that are owners/managers of established businesses (businesses older than 42 months) is 4% in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while it is 8% for the male entrepreneurs. Fear of failure rate (percent of individuals that see opportunities for starting business, but fear of failure would prevent them in it) is 26% for women in B&H, slightly lower than the rate for men. When it comes to the motives of entry into entrepreneurial activity, prevalent motive for both men and women is necessity, rather than opportunity for improvement, and there are small differences in rates of this indicator between men and women.
These are only few most important indicators of GEM research on women's entrepreneurship in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2012. If certain government institutions or non-government organizations express their interest for more detailed information on women's entrepreneurship in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2012 and have readiness to finance, GEM team of Bosnia and Herzegovina can create special report on women's entrepreneurship in B&H for 2012, based on GEM world's report on women's entrepreneurship and conducting its own research. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2012 Women's Report can be downloaded on the official page of GEM consortium (www.gemconsortium.org) and Entrepreneurship Development (www.cerpod-tuzla.org), and it is also possible to ask the staff of ED Centre for more information.

On Wednesday, 29th May 2013 in hotel "Europe" Sarajevo, Entrepreneurship Development Centre organized the promotion of fifth annual BiH GEM report, entitled "GEM BiH 2012: Through Entrepreneurship Education towards Youth (Self) Employment". The report was created on the basis of research results within the world largest academic research project in the filed of entrepreneurship – Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), which is the most referent methodology for entrepreneurship monitoring in the world. More than 198.000 adults from 69 countries (including Bosnia and Herzegovina) which represent 75% of world population and create 87% of world GDP, took part in 2012 GEM research.
Around 70 participants attended the promotion event, including respectable lecturers from the field of entrepreneurship, representatives of government, non-government and business sector as well as academics, professors, students, and other stakeholders.

Welcome speech was given by Sanjin Halimović, Federal minister of Development, Entrepreneurship and Crafts; Sorinel Ghetau, director of Oxfam Italia; Mike Chambers, head of Swiss funded Youth Employment Project (YEP) and former director of Prince’s Fund in the UK, as well as by Professor Bahrija Umihanić, leader of GEM team Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Members of GEM team Bosnia-Herzegovina presented results and findings of BiH GEM report 2012. Mirela Omerović spoke about Entrepeneurial attitudes, activities and aspirations, while Rasim Tulumović spoke about Entrepreneurial Framework Conditions. Topic Entrepreneurship and migration was presented by Majda Mujanović, coordinator of Entrepreneurship Development Center in absence of Slađana Simić, one of the GEM team members. Special focus in this report was on interaction between entrepreneurship education and youth employment in B&H, which was the topic of Ranko Markuš presentation. Professor Bahrija Umihanić, leader of GEM team presented conclusions and recommendations. General conclusion is that youth involvement in entrepreneurship is reduced and that youth enter entrepreneurship mostly out of necessity. In combination with insufficient entrepreneurship education in formal and informal education system, such situation calls for more attention of relevant stakeholders to be paid on entrepreneurship development in B&H.
Partner on GEM project in 2012 is University of Tuzla. Promotion event was supported by Oxfam Italia and BH Telecom, while publishing was supported by Federal ministry of Development, Entrepreneurship and Crafts; Ministry of Development and Entrepreneurship of Tuzla Canton, Municipality of Tuzla, MCF Prizma and Youth Employment Project (YEP).
